Bags are a necessity and a convenience in a society where nearly half of the residents use public transportation. And it's not just plastic bags that are ubiquitous. Almost everyone, including men, carry some sort of reusable bag. Designer bags, purses and shopping bags are common for the ladies. Young men and students tend to prefer backpacks. The businessmen types usually carry satchels or briefcases. Some men go the murse route. For large purchases or bulky groceries, either basic metal or canvas-covered shopping trolleys are the preferred mode of carrying items. During the holidays, rolling, hard-sided suitcases make an appearance in spades.
So when you visit Singapore, don't get caught without a bag in hand. After all, you need someplace to put all of those umbrellas (for the rain), tissues (for the hawkers centers), smartphones, tourist maps and flyers, and shopping goodies.
*Free bonus tip: Strollers can do double duty. In addition to being for kids, they are also frequently used as luggage trolleys and battering rams.

As this article points out, carrying bags are essentials in Singapore. Since I always carry a bag, it is great to know that other people in the world have the same bag habit.
